Event Line-Up:

Day 1: Unpacking the New Social Studies Standards

In K-5, 6-8, and 9-12 grade level groupings, teachers read and analyze the new content standards, at the forest level (understanding the K-12 articulation) as well the trees level (honing in on their grade and grade bands' courses and topics). They will walk away having considered what they already have in place that is fortified by these standards as well as done some collaborative work on materials and resources they will need based on new topics and content.

Day 2

Session A: Using Popular Culture to Create Engaging Inquiry Lessons

During this session participants will work other educators to created inquiry lessons using the C3 inquiry framework. We will review the inquiry approach, thoroughly examining all four inquiry dimensions.  After that, all participants will learn how to create inquiry activities using popular culture from the 20th and 21st centuries (using movies, television and movies). All presenters will leave with at least one activity that is directly related to a class that they teach.  Participants will learn more about inquiry; participants will also learn about strategies to use popular culture in the social studies classroom.

Session B: Indigenous Ways with the 5 Tribes

To support teachers in preparation for new educational standards encompassing Native American Studies and K-12 instruction, educators from the 5 Tribes are joining to present a three-hour professional learning session. The goals of this session are to improve background knowledge about our local Tribal Nations and to build a comfortable learning environment with educators through discussions of Indigenous cultural identity.

  • Golden Hill Paugussett

  • Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation

  • Mohegan Tribe

  • Schaghticoke Tribal Nation
