The Spirit of Revolution: The Connecticut Line Explored!
Gamification is an increasingly popular way to teach subjects like history, with topics like the Hajj Trail for college students and the Oregon Trail for younger students. To help celebrate the American 250th and to make local history a more accessible subject, Connecticut Explored and a team of historians has been developing a simulation called The Spirit of Revolution: The Connecticut Line Explored!, a non-competitive game that allows users to experience the lives of people during the Revolutionary War. The character choices, based on real-life examples, include a Euro-American spy, an African American doctor, an Indigenous soldier, a Euro-American farm wife, an African American shopkeeper, and an Indigenous laundress. Users will make decisions in their chosen role as the Connecticut Line of the Continental Army advances through the war. In the first segment, players will experience the announcement of the Battle of Lexington, followed by participation in Bunker Hill. The first segment ends with the Battle of Trenton. There is no limit on the number of times users can play the game, so they can experience it as various characters. There are two reading levels for the game and curricula will accompany the simulation. In this webinar, we will present the game (in development) and discuss what teachers would like to see in the game and how we can make it useful for the classroom. We also want to solicit participation from interested teachers as the game takes shape.
